60th Birthday Weekend-June 8th/9th 2012-Full Details

Unlike previous years the emphasis this year is on the Club rather than the individual, and is for members to carry the Club Flag over the route of the Paddy Buckley Round (PBR). The walk is organised as a relay with the route divided into five led sections. Each section can be sub-divided into shorter led walks to cater for a variety of fitness and experience levels. A brief overview of the organisation is included. This may influence accommodation/travel decisions. Further detail will appear in the coming months.

It is ten years since West Bromwich Mountaineering Club last held an event of this nature. In that time the club has attracted many new members and so, in planning is celebration, we have made every effort to include everyone.

The weekend will begin on Friday 8th June at 4am on the summit of Yr Aran.

Saturday 9th June The normal monthly coach leave West Brom at 7am for a Long Meet, destination Nant Gwynant, dropping off at Capel Curig, Pen y Gwryd Hotel, The Hut and Beddgelert. The coach will depart from the Hut at 9-9.30pm. Members using the coach will have the opportunity to join or to do their own thing. Finally, the day will end with a grand Barbecue/Social at the Hut/Plas Gwynant.

This final event is being part subsidised by the club and the cost to both members and guests is included in the cost of accommodation and coach travel.

For anyone wishing to stay the weekend two options are available:

We need to know probable numbers for the coach. It will be a long meet with a one off fare of £23 to takento account barbecue costs.

1) two nights bed and breakfast at Plas Gwynant at £55 per bed for the two nights. The limit is 40 beds with no one night option.

2) A small amount of camping in the grounds of Plas Gwynant has been negotiated. This is limited to 15 campers per night and once again costs have been set to include the barbecue.

The committee is very aware that cheaper alternatives on local camp sites, etc., exist but Plas Gwynant, in addition to beds, also provides suitable indoor spaces should we be unlucky with the weather. For this reason we urge you to use Plas Gwynant.

The PBR is a serious 60mile mountain route taking in 47 summits and, being a serious club, some memberswill obviously be tempted to ‘have-a-go’. Great, but this is not the ideal format, the emphasis in its 60th year must be the Club. If the PBR is on your wish list then the committee will support an attempt in 2013.

Hopefully there will be something for everyone, from doing your own thing; perhaps climbing, perhaps wandering the lower section of the Watkin Path or perhaps simply enjoying the Gwynant Valley, to getting fully involved in the Paddy Buckley Round. This an opportunity to meet with friends old and new in a setting which has been at the very heart of West Bromwich Mountaineering Club for the last sixty years.
